During a break in class today, I walked outside for some air and checked my phone’s internet to see if anything major had happened in the sports world (as I do occasionally…like when I’m bored outta my mind) and saw the Pistons had fired Flip Saunders. This guy took Detroit to five straight Conference Finals, and apparently that wasn’t enough. I can somewhat understand that move…but promoting an assistant with as much NBA head coaching experience as me (or NONE)? Don’t know about that decision…
The Pistons have all the same pieces essentially that won the title a few years ago, and even added a couple younger players (Maxiell and Stuckey), but have been beaten by Wade, LeBron, and the Big Three the past three years. Throw the Magic in there, the Sixers possibly as well, and I think Detroit may be in trouble. Those teams aren’t that far away in my opinion so who knows. Just goes to show you how important championships are in professional sports…
Elsewhere, David Ortiz went on the DL with a wrist injury and could be out…for a while. Should be interesting to see how the Red Sox respond. Obviously it’s times for some players to step up, as Papi was just starting to get it going after the abysmal (and fluke-ish) start. I think they’ll at least get the wild card, cuz Tampa Bay isn’t gonna be around all year. And it’s not like Manny, Lowell, Youk, and company can’t keep it going.
The NBA likes to stretch its playoffs out, so it’s another couple days before Game 1 Thursday night. That said, the Cubs and TAMPA BAY are leading the NL and AL, how much stock can we put into that?? The Cubs I think are legit and should compete for the pennant barring injury or catastrophe…wait, it is the Cubs…
However, those pings you hear are from the NCAA Baseball Tournament. I’m all about college sports, even though Tennessee tanked BAD the last half of the conference schedule and finished below .500. I am certainly no college baseball expert, I’ll leave that to Eric Sorenson over at CSTV. His Extra Innings blog gives good and entertaining opinions and recaps from all the regionals. He’ll be all over the Super Regionals coming up this next weekend too. Until The Finals, that’s all the sports I got…
Day #1 of summer school went swimmingly. Left the apartment a little ater 10am, got back just before 5pm. Here’s some notes of interest…
(1) There’s more people here doing what I’m doing than I thought. I even saw some familiar faces here and there, and TRECS (Tennessee’s Student Recreation Center) wasn’t completely empty for an afternoon. Sure it wasn’t ridiculously packed like it is in Spring/Fall, but there were plenty there.
(2) Me riding a bike + hills = BAD. I learned early today that I CANNOT ride my bike up ANY hill, even the ones I had never before noticed.
(3) It’s gonna get hotter outside, and whether I bike or walk to class, I’m gonna sweat. No way around it. Ah, but the University will save me there, with the AC in Humanities and the Comm Building on FULL BLAST. I swear, after sitting in my Journalism/Law class for two hours, I couldn’t feel my feet (I’m wearing flip-flops). No wonder they’re raising tuition AGAIN…
As for class, they won’t be as bad. For poetry, my teacher seems really laid back and the workload seems manageable. Keep in mind I am no poetry fan – or I don’t deal with poetry unless I have to. As for JEM, the teacher…well, she’s all over the place. I think sticking to the book will be the best bet here.
I’m basically counting down til I get a little break/trip home the weekend after next week. After that, I’ll have the Rocky Top Summer League to look forward to. Nothing better than watching the extra-athletic Basketball Vols play streetball in a non-AC gym…I’m sure I’ll have a few posts devoted to that experience…and maybe even some photos…
