Yes, I stayed up til 5am watching the US basketball team beat Spain and get their much-deserved gold medal. I would have posted earlier, except that I got up about half an hour ago…

What a great job and effort by all involved – the players, Coach K and his staff, and Jerry Colangelo for getting the US back to its rightful spot atop the podium. We have the best league, the best players, and even though there’s some pretty big differences in the international and NBA games, we should still dominate. This team did dominate.
I know many will say they don’t like the guys on the team representing their country or some garbage like that, but having watched every minute of every game and seeing what the players did on off days actually being apart of the Olympics, how can you not be proud of them and feel happy for them? Watching them after the game last night/this morning getting their medals, it was like they were kids getting a shiny new toy. Pure exuberant joy at winning the gold for their country.

Different from the previous eight years, this was truly a team. Many of those guys played the best defense I’ve ever seen them play, because they can use their incredible athletic ability to exert more energy defensively since there’s five scoring options on the floor, as opposed to two at the most. Other than last night, their defense was outstanding.
Different players stepped up in different games and different times – the sign of a team. Last night it was Dwayne Wade in the first half and Kobe Bryant down the stretch. Kobe’s four-point play ultimately sealed the gold. LeBron James was sensational as always. I had no idea Chris Bosh was that good of an all-around player. I’m excited I’ll get to see Chris Paul, Deron Williams, and Dwight Howard play for who knows how many more years.

I’m a huge basketball fan and in the last year-plus I’ve really become a big fan of the NBA. I think it gets an undeserved bad rap and honestly I don’t see how you can be a true fan of the game of basketball and dislike the NBA. Every time I watch a game I’m just blown away at how good these guys are and how easy they make the game look, and that’s reason enough to watch.
Coming into the Olympics, honestly I wasn’t exactly getting too thrilled about them. I looked at them as a way to kill time before football season got underway. But the one thing I wanted I got last night with the US winning gold. So thank you LeBron, Kobe, D-Wade, Dwight Howard, J-Kidd, CP, D-Will, C Bosh, Melo, Tayshaun, Redd, Boozer, and K.
But also thank you to all of the Olympics and the athletes. I don’t know what I’ll do on weeknights now that they’re over and done with because I’m pretty sure I watched just about every night. There were so many great moments, particularly with Michael Phelps and Shawn’n'Nastia, but there were many, many more and I’m not going into all of them. For as little as I was expecting for the Games, I got so much more. Once again, a sincere thanks.
